Less Trash, More Recycling!!!

Dear Parents and Students,

This week we have been studying recycling. We have discussed what can and cannot be recycled, and where to take recycling. We talked about the ways that we have recycled in the past and came up with new ways to reduce the amounts of trash that we all produce in the future.

There are a few entertaining and informative sites that I have found that can teach the students more about recycling.

All that stuff that we throw away may not all really belong in a trash can. Learning what can and can't be recycled is the first step in becoming good recyclers. Learn what isn't really trash at this site.

The whole family can get involved in this home survey. The survey asks questions about recycling at home and will tell you how earth-friendly your household is. It might end up giving you new ideas to cut back on your trash production.

Take a trip to Recycle City!! This site has a map that will let your student click on just about anything. Everything on the map is related to recycling. When you click on something it tells you about that items impact on the environment. While on this site the students could just look around the town, or they could do the activity that is on the site by choosing the link that says activities. There is also a game on the site called Dumptown. I could not get my computer to load the game, but if you can I bet it's a good one.

I want to encourage to whole family to take part in these activities about recycling. There are many things included in the activities that I did not realize.

Producers, Consumer, Decomposers, and How they Fit Together!!!

Dear Parents and Teachers,

This week we have been working on producers, consumers, decomposers, Food Chains, and Food Webs.

Producers make their own food through photosynthesis and are eaten by consumers.

Consumers always either eat producers or other consumers.

Decomposers consume dead plants and animals, turning them into more simpler forms.

Food chains and food webs both are diagrams used to show the connection between different organisms that live in a given environment. Food webs are generally more complicated than food webs, because they are made up of more than one food chain integrated together.

Students can review examples of producers, consumers, and decomposers at this site. It is a very simple multiple choice style game.

This site has a good food chain review activity on it. It only covers on habitat, but has a couple of different question within it involving the animals. After trying out the review game, the students can try out the review quiz. The quiz asks basic questions to check comprehension of the overall topic of food chains.

After the student has reviewed producers, consumers, decomposers, and food chains they are ready to move onto the food web activity. This activity might be a little more challenging, however, all of the activities for this unit should be review for the students, and therefore quite easy for them.

Characteristics of the Earth and Solar System!!!

Dear Parents and Students,

We have been working on a unit over the Earth and the Solar System. We have explored to layers that make up the Earth:

1. Inner Core
2. Outer Core
3. Mantle
4. Crust

We have also studied the other planets in our solar system and the order that they go in:

1. Sun (Star)
2. Mercury
3. Venus
4. Earth
5. Jupiter
6. Saturn
7. Uranus
8. Neptune

The students also have studied the size differences of the planets, but not in much detail.

We were unable to cover the size differences of the planet much in class, so this site will come in handy for those students who prefer to see everything visually represented. Students can choose two planets and click the
size comparison button to show the difference.

We learned about the order of the planets fairly extensively in class. Students can use this site to select the planet that is named based on
looks and order from the sun. Quiz yourself and try to get a 100.

Make a visual representation of the layers of the Earth with food. With the help of your parents make a
big bowl of Earth.

Note to the parents:
I wanted to let you know that we also took a walk around the school yard Friday, leaving various sized round objects around the grounds to represent the size of the planets. We also took proportional amounts of steps between the Sun and each planet, so that the students could actually get a feel for how far apart everything out there truly is. Also, a small idea of the sizes of the planets related to the sun. Time permitting you might ask your student to show what we did to you, most of them got pretty into it.

The Rock Cycle!!!

Dear Parents and Students,

We have just begun our study of the rock cycle. We have learned about three different types of rocks:

1. Sedimentary
2. Metamorphic
3. Igneous

We have also been learning about the processes that take place to transform one kind of rock into another kind.

1. Cooling
2. Melting
3. Heat and Pressure
4. Weathering and erosion
5. Compacting and Cementing

The students are also aware of the importance of sediments and magma in the rock cycle. As well as, the fact that the rock cycle works in many different directions.

Here are some Internet sites that the students can use to reinforce the information they learned in class.

At the
interactive rock cycle site, students can view a chart containing all of the rock cycle parts that we have learned about. The chart also shows examples of the different rock types and short visuals showing the processes in an easy to understand way. After the student is comfortable with the chart they can fill in the chart themselves by answering a few questions.

After completing the previous activities the students can
test their knowledge by answering a short 15 question quiz. The quiz shows questions along with visual representations of the questions. The students can use the pictures as clues if they are not sure of the answer, allowing them to learn something new. After completing the quiz students will be shown the correct answers and will be given a grade. There is an option to print out the grade sheet, but this activity is just to reinforce learning and will not be graded by me.

Students, have you ever wanted to
make your own rocks? Now you can. The link will take you to a site with three recipes. The recipes will allow you to make examples of an igneous rock, a metamorphic rock, and a sedimentary rock with common household materials. Students please ask your parents to help you make the rocks if you choose to do so.

Enjoy the activities that I have provided. They are valuable learning tools that are also fun for students.
